June 2026: Winners, Losers & Trends — Indian Equity Market Monthly Review

overall index of the june month

June 2026 was a two-sided month for Indian equities that still ended modestly higher. Benchmarks spent much of the month consolidating as an IT-led selloff, caution ahead of the June-quarter earnings season, and worries over the US interest-rate outlook capped the upside, even as cooling West Asia tensions and easing crude oil prices improved sentiment. The Nifty 50 rose 1.67% to 23,865.75 and the Sensex added 1.69% to 76,478.67, with the broader mid and small-cap space outperforming the large-cap benchmarks. Banking and financial stocks did the heavy lifting, while the technology pack was the clear drag.

Banks led, IT lagged:

A strong rally in banking and financial names (Nifty Bank up 6.41%, Nifty Private Bank up 6.43%) powered the market, while the Nifty IT index was the standout laggard, down 9.56%, as heavyweights like TCS, Infosys and Wipro fell on weak discretionary tech-spend signals (including a cautious Accenture outlook) and a higher-for-longer US rate view.

RBI holds, turns cautious:

At its June 3 to 5 meeting the Monetary Policy Committee kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25% with a neutral stance, its third straight hold, but trimmed its FY27 growth forecast to 6.6% and raised its inflation projection to 5.1%, citing West Asia tensions, energy prices and monsoon uncertainty. It also announced a set of measures to attract foreign capital inflows.

Record-strong GST:

Gross GST collection for June 2026 rose 13.9% year-on-year to ₹1,94,812 crore, led by a 34.6% surge in import revenue, with net GST up 11.2% at ₹1,62,377 crore, underlining resilient underlying demand.

FII selling, DII support:

Foreign investors stayed net sellers through much of June (net selling of about ₹43,044 crore in the cash market up to June 19), while domestic institutions kept absorbing the supply and steadied the market.

Crude cools on ceasefire:

A pause in the Iran-Israel conflict and progress toward a US-Iran understanding pulled crude oil sharply lower through the month, easing a key pressure point for India’s import bill and the rupee.

The June-quarter (Q1 FY27) results season gets underway in July, with IT and banking numbers likely to set the tone after a month of sharp sector divergence.

Indian equity markets entered a highly selective phase in June 2026 as broad-based participation cooled, giving way to sharp structural shifts across key growth drivers. Upward momentum was led aggressively by financial heavyweights, with Private Bank surging 6.43%, closely followed by the broader Bank index at 6.41% and Financial Services at 5.11%. In sharp contrast, a pronounced late-month expiry selloff intensified pain across a total of six losing sectors, dragged down primarily by steep corrections in IT, which plunged 9.56%, alongside notable pullbacks in Metal (6.51%) and Commodities (4.66%).

SME June IPO:

June 2026 proved to be an incredibly active period for the primary market, with a total of 19 IPOs making their market debut. Despite selective lineup sentiment, a stark divide emerged between the month’s new entrants: only 7 companies secured listing-day gains, while 12 fell into negative territory. Leading the top performance gainers was Merritronix Ltd. with an explosive 177.65% return, followed by strong showings from Susan Electricals India Ltd. at 86.02% and Avience Biomedicals Ltd. at 80.07%. On the flip side, the top performance losers suffered sharp declines, led by UHM Vacation Ltd. plunging 69.31%, with Aureate Tradde Ltd. dropping 61.2% and Utkal Speciality Industries India Ltd. losing 36.67%, underscoring the high-risk, polarized nature of the month’s subscription activity.
