August Market Roundup
August 2026 was a month of two markets. The headline indices slipped, with the Nifty 50 ending the month at 24,080.40 (down 1.14%) and the Sensex at 76,957.27 (down 1.46%), snapping a two-month winning streak as renewed geopolitical tensions, firmer crude oil and concerns over US interest rates weighed on large caps. The Sensex had touched 79,143.15 early in the month before giving way. The broader market told a different story: the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 2.15% and 3.16%, their fifth straight monthly gain, while the primary market had its busiest month of the year.
Key Highlights
CAS reshapes the close: SEBI’s Closing Auction Session went live on August 3 for stocks with F&O contracts, and it made its presence felt. The Nifty saw a sharp jump in the final minutes on day one, and on August 27, the first monthly Sensex derivatives expiry under the new regime, the indicative index value plunged during the auction before recovering most of the losses by the close, adding a new layer of end-of-day volatility.
RBI holds, lifts growth view: At its August 3 to 5 meeting the Monetary Policy Committee unanimously kept the repo rate at 5.25% with a neutral stance, its fourth straight hold, while raising its FY27 growth forecast to 6.7% from 6.6% and trimming its inflation projection to 5% from 5.1%. Governor Sanjay Malhotra described the stance as neither dovish nor hawkish, seeking greater clarity on inflation. The next review is due October 5 to 7.
Growth beats estimates: India’s GDP grew 7.8% in the April to June quarter (Q1 FY27), up from 6.9% a year ago and ahead of the RBI’s 7% estimate, with services up 10%, manufacturing up 9.2% and investment up 11.9%, underscoring resilient domestic demand despite global headwinds.
GST near the ₹2-lakh-crore mark: Gross GST collection for August came in at ₹1,99,853 crore, up 14.8% year-on-year, with import revenue surging 29% to ₹62,604 crore. Net collections rose 8.3% to ₹1,68,057 crore as refunds jumped 68%. The figure was lower than July’s ₹2.11 lakh crore but kept the run-rate close to the two-lakh-crore level.
FPIs stay buyers, IPOs boom: Foreign portfolio investors were net buyers again, deploying around ₹20,000 crore across primary and secondary markets, similar to July. The primary market had its strongest month of 2026, with 21 mainboard IPOs raising about ₹21,000 crore, and Tempsens Instruments more than doubled on its August 28 debut, the year’s biggest listing gain. NSE-listed market capitalisation rose by ₹5 trillion to ₹490 trillion.
Outlook
GST Council on September 12: The 57th GST Council meeting in New Delhi will be watched for rate and compliance decisions after collections held close to the two-lakh-crore mark, with refunds rising sharply.
Global rates and flows: The US Federal Reserve’s September meeting and the tone of its commentary will shape foreign flows and precious metals; a hawkish Fed stance knocked gold and silver ETFs on the final day of August. Elevated US bond yields remain a key influence on FPI positioning.
Crude, costs and the festive season: The path of crude oil and West Asia tensions, along with input-cost pressures that have hurt FMCG margins, will be tracked into the festive season, while a strong IPO pipeline (including proposed Jio Platforms and NSE offerings) keeps the primary market in focus. The RBI next meets October 5 to 7.
Sectoral Movements
August’s sector map was mixed. Metal (3.77%), PSU Bank (2.90%), Pharma (2.50%), Private Bank (1.99%) and IT (1.59%) led the gainers as banks and metals found buyers, while FMCG was the standout laggard, falling 6.27% as input-cost inflation in palm oil, crude derivatives and sugar squeezed margins and pushed HUL, ITC, Dabur, Emami and Godrej Consumer to 52-week lows. Media (3.68% lower), Oil & Gas (1.19% lower) and Financial Services (0.97% lower) also closed in the red, while Auto, Realty and Consumer Durables were broadly flat.
