Navia Weekly Roundup (July 20 – 24, 2026)

Week in the Review

Indian equity benchmarks ended the week sharply lower amid broad-based selling pressure led by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, a sharp surge in crude oil prices and sustained foreign fund outflows.

Indices Analysis

For the week, the BSE Sensex fell 1.95%, to end at 76,059.77, while the Nifty 50 shed 1.75%, to close at 23,767.45. The Bank Nifty declined 1.69% to 56,693.50 and the Fin Nifty dropped 2.39% to 25,909.90.

Benchmarks fell in all five sessions, handing the Nifty its worst week in four months and the Sensex its steepest weekly drop in two, as the mood turned decisively risk-off. Continued US strikes on Iran and a Houthi attack on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea widened the conflict to a new shipping chokepoint, sending Brent surging over 10% for the week and briefly past the $100-a-barrel mark, while MCX crude oil jumped 17%. The spike stoked worries over inflation, the trade gap and corporate margins for import-dependent India, and kept the rupee under pressure.

Earnings added to the strain: HDFC Bank’s in-line profit was overshadowed by a sharper-than-expected squeeze in net interest margins, dragging private lenders lower across the board, while Infosys cut its FY27 revenue growth guidance and IndiGo swung to a quarterly loss on surging fuel costs. Persistent FII selling and fresh US tariffs on trading partners compounded the weakness, though domestic institutions absorbed part of the supply and safe-haven demand lifted gold and silver.
