Navia Weekly Roundup (Oct 19 – 23, 2026)

Week in the Review
Indian equity indices snapped their two-week winning streak amid concerns over potential energy supply disruptions as escalating geopolitical tensions pushed crude oil prices above $116 per barrel. Persistent foreign fund outflows weighed on the benchmark indices, while domestic institutional buying provided some support.
Indices Analysis
In a holiday-shortened week, with markets closed on Tuesday, October 20, for Dussehra, all four trading sessions ended in the red. The Nifty 50 fell 384.00 points, or 1.67%, to close at 22,600.00, while the BSE Sensex lost 1,252.15 points, or 1.68%, to end at 73,123.83. The Bank Nifty declined 2.00% to 54,287.35, and the Fin Nifty dropped 3.96% to 24,403.00. Forty-three of the 50 Nifty stocks ended lower, and the damage was far worse beyond the frontline: the Nifty Midcap 100 shed 5.6% and the Smallcap 100 7.3%, their worst week in 20 months, while India VIX spiked as much as 20% during the week before closing at 16.76 on Friday.
Crude was the week’s dominant worry. Brent opened at $109.65 a barrel and surged almost 7% to a high of $117.45 on Friday as renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure and Gulf shipping, with no diplomatic progress on the Iran conflict, revived fears of supply disruption, and reports that the US could strike Iran after its midterm elections added to the unease. MCX crude ended the week 1.14% higher. Sectors that use crude as a key raw material, from consumer durables to FMCG and autos, bore the brunt of the selling, while financials led the frontline lower after September-quarter results underwhelmed: HDFC Bank fell about 5% after missing profit estimates, Axis Bank dropped 5.6% on its own miss, Bajaj Finance lost 5.4% on margin concerns and Colgate-Palmolive India slid 4.8%.
Liquidity was the other pressure point. Jio Platforms’ $3.2 billion IPO raised about ₹8,110 crore from 212 anchor investors on Monday and became the first public issue globally to cross one crore applications, with the issue subscribed 13.8 times by Friday’s close; analysts noted the mega-issue drained secondary-market liquidity even as FIIs stayed sellers and DIIs kept buying. The selloff was deepest in the broader market, where Swiggy crashed 24.9% for the week to a record low after losses at its Instamart quick-commerce arm widened, and last week’s new listing Zetwerk Manufacturing slid 7% below its issue price. Attention now turns to the remaining Q2 earnings, crude’s trajectory and the Jio Platforms listing in the coming week.
