The Dark Side of Discounts: How to Outsmart Online Shopping Scams in India

It’s 2026, a new year filled with expectations, and in many ways, the year brings new opportunities and expectations. But, the excitement of online ‘Mega Sale’ is only a click away. You can have anything from a designer watch to the latest smartphone delivered to your doorstep. But as India’s digital economy booms, so does its shadow: online shopping scams.  

Cybercriminals have traded crude tactics for sophisticated AI-generated websites and flawless social media ads. Nowadays, the large discount banners can sometimes be used by fraudulent websites to attract unsuspecting buyers. Whether you’re a seasoned shopper or a first-timer, understanding how online shopping scams work in India can help you protect yourself. 

Fraudulent websites often rely on urgency and attractive discounts to reduce cautious decision-making, that moment when you’re so excited about a price that you stop checking the details. To stay safe, you must recognize the anatomy of a scam. 

Scammers mostly use “Lookalike” domains. For example, instead of the official site, you might see branded-watches-deals.xyz or shop-india-sale.top. 

Follow the rule, only shop from official e-commerce websites or verified apps. And always look for https:// and the padlock icon. However, be warned that in 2026, many fake sites now use security certificates to appear “secure.” So, always double-check the spelling of the brand name in the URL. 

A flat 90% off on luxury brand that never goes on sale? It is considered a classic red flag for online shopping scams. These ads create a false sense of urgency, like “Only 2 pieces left!” this may encourage quick decisions without verifying the website’s authenticity.

Indian retailers provide a clear “Contact Us” page with the physical office address, verified GST number and a customer support helpline. The only way to contact a site through a “Fill this form” page or random Gmail address, it is advisable to avoid interacting with such websites.  

In these scams, the sellers insist on full advance payment, often disabling the Cash-on-Delivery (COD) option. Some sellers send a low-quality item like a plastic toy instead of an expensive watch. In some cases, fraudsters send a low-value item to generate a “delivered” status, making chargebacks or disputes more difficult.  

In some cases, scammers send messages such as; you receive a WhatsApp message: “your parcel from (popular mall) is stuck. Pay ₹5 to update your address.” This is typically a phishing attempt where the link may be used to capture sensitive information such as UPI or card details.

Don’t trust a product just because it has five stars. In 2026, scammers mostly use AI to generate hundreds of realistic-looking reviews and fake videos of “influencers” praising the product. So, you must check for repetitive language or a sudden burst of reviews all posted on the same day.

🔸Stick to verified apps: Download shopping apps only from the official Google Play or Apple App Store. 

🔸Use secure gateways: Avoid direct UPI or wallet transfers to personal mobile numbers. Use the integrated payment gateways of the website for secure payments. 

🔸Search for reviews: Before trusting a new site, search for “[Site Name] + fraud” or “[Site Name] + reviews” on a search engine.  

As a precaution, for financial transactions, remember that many Indian banks have shifted to the .bank.in domain. It’s a verified space regulated by the RBI. If a “banking” link for your payment doesn’t end in .bank.in, exercise caution.  

If you have been cheated, prompt reporting may improve the chances of addressing the fraud. You must report the fraud immediately; that will help the authorities freeze the scammer account and potentially recover your money.  

Call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 immediately. The helpline operates 24/7 and is designed to assist in freezing fraudulent transactions during the early stages.

If you received a suspicious link via SMS or WhatsApp, report it to the Department of Telecommunications via the Sanchar Saathi portal at https://sancharsaathi.gov.in/ This helps the government block the fraudulent numbers and websites before they reach others. 

Online shopping should be a convenient and joyful experience, not a source of financial stress. As cybercriminals become more sophisticated in 2026, staying informed and catious can help reduce the risk of online shopping fraud. By recognizing the red flags—like unrealistic 90% discounts, suspicious URLs, and high-pressure “limited time” tactics—you can effectively navigate the web without falling into the traps of online shopping scams in India.
