Rising crude oil prices on escalating US-Iran tensions, a weaker rupee and continued foreign fund outflows weighed on sentiment, while sustained buying by domestic institutional investors helped limit the downside.

Indices Analysis

For the week, the BSE Sensex fell 1.93%, to end at 74,781.76, while the Nifty 50 shed 1.81%, to close at 23,398.10. The Bank Nifty slipped 0.91% to 56,606.55, while the Fin Nifty declined 1.98% to 25,545.40. Both benchmarks closed at their lowest levels since June 11, with 41 of the 50 Nifty stocks ending the week in the red.

Crude oil dominated sentiment throughout the week. Brent surged nearly 9% to settle at $104.47 a barrel as attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz intensified, Iran-aligned Houthis threatened Saudi oil exports in the Red Sea, and Iran warned on Monday that energy infrastructure across the Gulf, including US oil and gas interests, was vulnerable. Oil-sensitive names such as Reliance Industries, Indian Oil, BPCL, IndiGo and Asian Paints bore the brunt, and some analysts now see $120 crude as possible if hostilities persist. IT stocks logged their worst week since April, sliding 5.7%, after stronger-than-expected US payrolls data raised the odds of a Fed rate hike at this month’s FOMC meeting and stoked fears that American clients would trim discretionary technology spending. The rupee weakened 1%, its sharpest weekly fall since mid-May, while foreign investors, net buyers through July and August, pulled out nearly ₹8,000 crore in September as of Thursday.

Even so, the damage was contained by sustained domestic institutional buying and resilient broader markets, with the Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 down just 1.4% and 0.9%. Wednesday’s session captured the split: while the benchmarks tumbled with India VIX spiking 6%, Adani Enterprises, Max Healthcare, Adani Ports and Coal India topped the gainers. Thursday snapped a three-session losing run amid significant closing auction volatility, and Friday saw the Sensex dive over 700 points intraday before recovering 622 points from the day’s low on easing crude and buying in HDFC Bank and IT stocks. In a landmark announcement, NSE set the price band for its own IPO at ₹1,700-1,785, with bidding from September 17. The coming week brings India’s CPI and WPI prints and the US Fed decision, with markets shut on Monday, September 14, for Ganesh Chaturthi.

Interactive Zone!

Test your knowledge with our Markets Quiz!
