However, strong domestic institutional inflows, strength in the mid- and small-cap segments and a late-week rebound led by IT stocks helped cushion the decline and limit the weekly losses.

Indices Analysis

For the week, the BSE Sensex fell 0.44%, to end at 77,264.51, while the Nifty 50 shed 0.47%, to close at 24,175.65. The Bank Nifty declined 0.53% to 57,496.30, while the Fin Nifty edged up 0.06% to 26,286.50.

It was a choppy week from start to finish. Benchmarks slipped on Monday ahead of fresh US sanctions on Iran, recovered on Tuesday on buying in pharma, healthcare and PSU bank stocks, and gave up those gains on Wednesday as IT shares fell after the US paused visa appointments. Thursday’s monthly derivatives expiry brought the sharpest fall of the week, with the Sensex sliding 539 points to 76,933.59 on last-minute selling in HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries. The new closing auction session (CAS) remained a source of concern after sharp swings on expiry days: BSE derivatives turnover hit an 11-month expiry-day low and its indicative close briefly fell more than 3% during the auction, though SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said the regulator was not considering immediate changes to the mechanism.

Crude offered some relief midweek, with Brent slipping about 2% to around $86.8 a barrel after Iran and Oman resumed talks on a temporary corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, pulling India VIX down nearly 6% to 10.45 and lifting banks. Friday’s rebound was led by IT, with the Nifty IT index jumping 3.5% after upbeat results from Nvidia and Salesforce brightened the outlook for global technology spending, even as investors weighed Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole remarks that kept a September rate hike on the table. Foreign investors stepped up selling on Friday with net outflows of ₹5,039.80 crore, while domestic institutions bought a net ₹5,183.93 crore, and midcaps outperformed to post gains for the week.

Interactive Zone!

Test your knowledge with our Markets Quiz!
